April 7th 2006 is the date of the 500th anniversary of the birth, in the Castle of Javier (Navarre – Spain), of Francis Xavier, professor at the Sorbonne, co-founder (under the direction of Ignatius of Loyola) of the Company of Jesus, missionary in the East Indies and Japan, and a universal figure who forged strong links of co-operation and understanding between East and West.
Throughout the year the Government of Navarre, the Sanctuary of Javier of the Company of Jesus, the Archbishopric of Pamplona and the Municipal Council of Javier are promoting a large number of cultural, religious and social events to commemorate this anniversary – from December 3 rd 2005 to December 3 rd of 2006. They are open to initiatives from other institutions and the general interest of everyone.
